19) Yo La Tengo – Coloured
20) Vic Chesnutt – Flirted With You All My Life

In other news related to IHTOV, it is evident that not much posting goes on around here. We’re trying to change that. That’s right, “we.” In the near future (which, for this site, is probably a month or so), IHTOV will be welcoming a new voice to the sporadic updates on the blog, which will (maybe) increase the amount of updating. Once every thing is settled, we plan on updating 3 times a week, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. This thing is definitely a spare time hobby.

In the mean time, take a look at the mix and give some of those songs a chance. The grand majority of that mix is new music (with the exception of Maritime and Broken Social Scene– who is due for a new record this year).

I’d link stuff/embed YouTube videos/etc., but I am lazy and you know how to Google. However, if I had to pick a single song on the whole thing, though, I’d say I must highly recommend Titus Andronicus. Their new album, The Monitor, is due out March 9th from XL. It is decidedly kick ass.

Finally, this mix contains two of the music world’s recently dearly departed: Jay Reatard and Vic Chesnutt. RIP to both of them. Let’s hope 2010 is a year where we get lots of exciting music (Pavement reunion tour! LCD Soundsystem’s new album!) and not one like 2009 where we lose a giant bunch of talent (Michael Jackson, Chris “Spacewolf” Feinstein, Teddy Pendergrass just to name a select few).

queen city rnr

Posted by ihtov on November 24, 2009

I usually spend the majority of my Tuesday being domestic and listening to WOXY, and right now they are spinning a track (“The Little Patton”) from Cincinnati’s The Seedy Seeds. This fantastic band recently cleaned up at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards (including beating out my good friends The Lions Rampant in a couple categories), and this reminds me that I do not talk enough about all the great music being made back in Cincy these days. While I’ve never lived in Cincinnati proper, my hometown is closer to downtown than a lot of the people who live in Ohio with Cincinnati addresses, so I feel well connected to the city and the music. Back in high school and even through a bit of the college years, I spent a lot of my time watching my friends play music around the city. Now that I’ve moved South, I don’t get the chance to catch as many bands as I used to, but there are a few great bands that I make the trip to see.

For the time being, here is a quick list (meaning incomplete) of awesome bands from Cincinnati worth your time. Maybe later today I’ll come back with some band links, mp3s, videos, pictures, or something. But don’t count on it; you know how to use Google.

The Lions Rampant
The Seedy Seeds
Frontier Folk Nebraska
You, You’re Awesome
Brian Olive
Buffalo Killers
Bad Veins
The Read
The Frankl Project
500 Miles to Memphis

teen dream

Posted by ihtov on November 23, 2009

I’ve encountered my first 2010 release in Beach House‘s Sub Pop debut release Teen Dream. Some of the blogs that I read are already saying nice things about the duo’s third full-length album, and I must agree with them.

Beach House is an indie band in all the polite senses of the word, and their songs really do sound like lush dreams. Victoria Legend has a fantastic voice that warrants both Nico and Mazzy Star comparisons, but she is more accessible with a blue-collar sensibility that feels natural instead of pretentious. The instrumental compositions offered up by Victoria and bandmate Alex Scally are nuanced yet satisfying, textured like a surrealistic landscape oil painting, but without the stagnation that can so easily accompany bands who play slower music meant to fill both space and time. Sure, this is a great headphone record, but also one that translates well to the old fashioned stereo (and I am thankful for a vinyl release).

“Norway” is the first single off Teen Dream, and it is readily available across the internets. Teen Dream hits US stores on January 26, 2010 in vinyl and CD formats. Also, according to Pitchfork, the album “will be released with a DVD containing a video for every song.”

Revitalized (now with nudity!)

Posted by ihtov on November 12, 2009

new flaming lips video? overrated. nudity isn’t shocking anymore, so this is passe. additionally, wayne’s obession with vaginas is childlike- and i mean that not as in ‘immature’ but as in ‘childlike wonder and fascination’- which is kind of awkward and creepy since he has a gray beard. riding bikes naked sounds uncomfortable, and the actors in this video definitely appear uncomfortable. All in all, this certainly isn’t a ‘nudity as beauty’ video if its trying to be one, and the viewer knows this with the camera’s obsession with female asses proves this. i do, though, like the organic feel of the video as a whole. finally, sure, wayne being pushed through the woods in his giant hampster ball by a bunch of naked people is fun, but no one ever needed to see his penis, especially since it is not made out of a space gun like flaming lips songs seem to imply it should be. overall, it was underwhelming, and if you’re looking for a video with nudity, i suggest checking out the Girls “XXX” version of “Lust for Life” if only for the part where one of the actor’s uses another actor’s penis as a microphone to sing the lyrics to the song. the Girls video is campy and adorable in all the best ways. plus, gay porn is the new porn, right?

You can view “Watch The Planets” at http://www.nme.com/video/bcid/49582897001

You can view “Lust for Life (XXX version)” at http://www.buddyhead.com/girls-–-“lust-for-life”-video-xxx-version/

Both are very much NSFW.

These albums aren’t officially out yet, but they probably exist on your local torrent sites. I suggest giving them a spin.

The Hold Steady – Stay Positive

Javelins (members of Thunderbirds Are Now!) – Heavy Meadows

Deerhunter – Microcastle

Damien Jurado – Caught In The Trees

Also, as a reminder, The Cool Kids dropped a new 6-song mix tape yesterday titled “That’s Stupid.” I’m about to give that a listen right now; maybe I’ll write some more about it later.

UPDATE: The mix tape rules.

Super short post today as I’m swamped with school work. However, with the announcement of a fall tour in support of Feed The Animals, you can expect a Girl Talk-heavy post tomorrow.

Best of 2008 (so far).

Posted by ihtov on June 30, 2008

Sunday marked the halfway point for the 2008 MLB season, and, since baseball is still technically America’s pastime, I figured this means it would be a good time to post a current best of the year list. Obviously, being a music blog, there is going to be quite a bit of list posting. Now, I have not sat down and thought about this list whatsoever which means it’s a completely arbitrary list. These will be listed in no particular order and without ceremony. Videos coming shortly as I am slow to YouTube.

No Age – Nouns

Titus Andronicus – The Airing of Grievances

Death Cab For Cutie – Narrow Stairs

Re-Up Gang – We Got It For Cheap, Volume 3 (mix tape)

Girl Talk – Feed The Animals

Ratatat – LP3

Beach House – Devotion

Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend

The Cool Kids – Cool Ass Ninjas (mix tape)

Sigur Rós – Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

I’m at work for another 3 hours or so which means I’ll probably continue to edit this posting. I’ll try to add some links or videos or something to opiate the masses as the day drags on.

Try, fail, repeat.

Posted by ihtov on June 30, 2008

This is probably my 4th attempt at a “music blog.” Dissonance, popXscene, previous incarnations of IHTOV, etc. However, this is my first time using Word Press; I’m sure I have a lot to learn.

Yes, I am a stupid hipster.

At any rate, I like to listen to music, but I usually get lazy and stop writing about it.

You won’t find anything mind blowing here, but I do promise nothing lame (i.e. posts on celebrity starlets and their mishaps). More than likely, this will end up being a sort of “listening journal” with some videos, concert dates/photos, and plenty of recommendations. It will probably be rare to see a proper album review.

I still make a mix every month and will always post the track list. Usually this mix is a collection new songs by new(er) artists, but this time around I decided I needed some old favorites in my life. I spent a chunk of time tooling around in iTunes today and came up with the following track list. It is untitled, another rarity for my mixes, but it’s a collection of songs I enjoy. I may (or more likely will not) update it with videos of the songs or something like that. Anyway, here’s June 2008:

The Thermals – Here’s Your Future
Oxford Collapse – Please Visit Your National Parks
Les Savy Fav – The Sweat Descends
Explosions In The Sky – Your Hand In Mine (with strings)
The Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Sonic Youth – Unmade Bed
Thistle – Repent! Repent!
Party of Helicopters – Mic My Mind
The Dismemberment Plan – Superpowers
Bloc Party – Always New Depths
Built To Spill – Conventional Wisdom
Superchunk – Act Surprised
Death Cab For Cutie – Company Calls Epilogue
Q and Not U – Soft Pyramids
Engine Down – Pantomime
Ted Leo and The Pharmacists – Me and Mia
Modest Mouse – Trailer Trash
The Wrens – Boys, You Won’t

Finally, if you are interested in getting an idea of what I’ve been listening to on my Macbook, check out my Last.fm profile. It is not always a good representation of what I’ve been listening to because we like to have parties at our apartment, and this usually results in a lot of songs being played by random people.

Tomorrow, while I’m “at work,” I will post something of more substance. Hopefully.
