queen city rnr

Posted by ihtov on November 24, 2009

I usually spend the majority of my Tuesday being domestic and listening to WOXY, and right now they are spinning a track (“The Little Patton”) from Cincinnati’s The Seedy Seeds. This fantastic band recently cleaned up at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards (including beating out my good friends The Lions Rampant in a couple categories), and this reminds me that I do not talk enough about all the great music being made back in Cincy these days. While I’ve never lived in Cincinnati proper, my hometown is closer to downtown than a lot of the people who live in Ohio with Cincinnati addresses, so I feel well connected to the city and the music. Back in high school and even through a bit of the college years, I spent a lot of my time watching my friends play music around the city. Now that I’ve moved South, I don’t get the chance to catch as many bands as I used to, but there are a few great bands that I make the trip to see.

For the time being, here is a quick list (meaning incomplete) of awesome bands from Cincinnati worth your time. Maybe later today I’ll come back with some band links, mp3s, videos, pictures, or something. But don’t count on it; you know how to use Google.

The Lions Rampant
The Seedy Seeds
Frontier Folk Nebraska
You, You’re Awesome
Brian Olive
Buffalo Killers
Bad Veins
The Read
The Frankl Project

teen dream

Posted by ihtov on November 23, 2009

I’ve encountered my first 2010 release in Beach House‘s Sub Pop debut release Teen Dream. Some of the blogs that I read are already saying nice things about the duo’s third full-length album, and I must agree with them.

Beach House is an indie band in all the polite senses of the word, and their songs really do sound like lush dreams. Victoria Legend has a fantastic voice that warrants both Nico and Mazzy Star comparisons, but she is more accessible with a blue-collar sensibility that feels natural instead of pretentious. The instrumental compositions offered up by Victoria and bandmate Alex Scally are nuanced yet satisfying, textured like a surrealistic landscape oil painting, but without the stagnation that can so easily accompany bands who play slower music meant to fill both space and time. Sure, this is a great headphone record, but also one that translates well to the old fashioned stereo (and I am thankful for a vinyl release).

“Norway” is the first single off Teen Dream, and it is readily available across the internets. Teen Dream hits US stores on January 26, 2010 in vinyl and CD formats. Also, according to Pitchfork, the album “will be released with a DVD containing a video for every song.”

Revitalized (now with nudity!)

Posted by ihtov on November 12, 2009

new flaming lips video? overrated. nudity isn’t shocking anymore, so this is passe. additionally, wayne’s obession with vaginas is childlike- and i mean that not as in ‘immature’ but as in ‘childlike wonder and fascination’- which is kind of awkward and creepy since he has a gray beard. riding bikes naked sounds uncomfortable, and the actors in this video definitely appear uncomfortable. All in all, this certainly isn’t a ‘nudity as beauty’ video if its trying to be one, and the viewer knows this with the camera’s obsession with female asses proves this. i do, though, like the organic feel of the video as a whole. finally, sure, wayne being pushed through the woods in his giant hampster ball by a bunch of naked people is fun, but no one ever needed to see his penis, especially since it is not made out of a space gun like flaming lips songs seem to imply it should be. overall, it was underwhelming, and if you’re looking for a video with nudity, i suggest checking out the Girls “XXX” version of “Lust for Life” if only for the part where one of the actor’s uses another actor’s penis as a microphone to sing the lyrics to the song. the Girls video is campy and adorable in all the best ways. plus, gay porn is the new porn, right?

You can view “Watch The Planets” at http://www.nme.com/video/bcid/49582897001

You can view “Lust for Life (XXX version)” at http://www.buddyhead.com/girls-–-“lust-for-life”-video-xxx-version/

Both are very much NSFW.
